Getting to the core of the fun at Apple Hill
Thousands flock to the region's farms and bake shops to experience the tastes and smells of harvest season and to eat anything and everything associated with apples.
What better way to fall into autumn than a trip to Apple Hill? Located in the hills of El Dorado County, Apple Hill is a popular tourist destination this time of year. Thousands flock to the region's farms and bake shops to experience the tastes and smells of harvest season and to eat anything and everything associated with apples.
Pies, caramel apples, dumplings and turnovers all call out to hungry visitors who venture up to Apple Hill this time of year. Over the Labor Day weekend, growers all around the area hung out their welcome signs and bake shops filled the air with the aroma of cinnamon and apples, signaling the official start of apple season. And there's even more to celebrate this year because it's turning out to be a great year for California apples. The state, overall, had a mild spring, which caused many apples to ripen early so they look and taste great.
Apple Hill started almost 40 years ago. The founding members wanted a place where seller and buyer could converse and talk to one another. The concept really took off, as did the success of the orchards in the area. Every year, veteran visitors return to their favorite farms and explore new sights and tastes.
One of the most popular bakeshops at Apple Hill is at the Kids Inc. Ranch run by Edio Delfino and his family. Edio was actually one of the founding fathers of Apple Hill and loves the opportunity to educate and entertain guests who stop by for a snack. Showing visitors what goes on behind the scenes at a working ranch is eye-opening for many guests, including many local school kids who frequently take trips up to the ranch. The bake shop, peeling station and cold-storage areas are all included on the tour of the ranch, as well as a quarter-mile nature trail where kids can get up close and personal with some of the farm animals.
