Gardening advice to grow on
Advice: "Good gardening means patience and dogged determination. There must be failures and losses, but by always pushing on, there will also be the reward of success. Those who do not know are apt to think that hardy flower gardening … is easy. It is not easy at all. It has taken me half a lifetime merely to find out what is best worth doing, and a good slice of another half to puzzle out ways of doing it."—Gertrude Jekyll, author
My take: British garden designer and author Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) was famous for her herbaceous borders. In fact, she invented them. Her color schemes and plantings are studied and copied today. And while it is true gardening can be hard, messy and dirty, no gardener I know, myself included, sees it as work or a chore. I couldn't be happier than when I am planting and moving dirt. It is a long process, and every day I learn something new.
