Stockton Asparagus Festival

The mighty green spear grabs the spotlight, again!

Years ago, Sunset magazine awarded the Stockton Asparagus Festival with the distinction of "Best of the West Food Fest," and the annual event continues to live up to that honor.

This year, more than 75,000 festival-goers dug in to the delectable dishes up for grabs at the festival's food court known as Asparagus Alley. According to festival organizers, the most popular dish was, of course, deep-fried asparagus, with more than 36,000 servings sold.

Asparagus ice cream was another crowd-pleasing dish, with 10,000 scoops served. And asparagus lovers ordered thousands of servings of asparaberry shortcake, asparagus and beef sandwiches, asparagus pasta, and asparagus burritos, for a grand total of 56,400 dishes served.  

In addition, there were also recipe and eating contests, chef demonstrations, a farmers market and everything else that fans of the green spear could hope for.

Portions of the proceeds benefit local charities. Since the first Stockton Asparagus Festival in 1986, more than $5.8 million has been given to participating charities.
