Orange ciabatta French toast
Auntie Em's French toast is quite popular, but it's not for the faint of heart. It's rich, crunchy and delicious.
Orange ciabatta French toast

Ingredients

Zest of 1 medium orange
1/3 cup fresh orange juice
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup heavy cream
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. honey
2 large eggs
8 slices ciabatta bread, sliced 1 inch thick
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tbsp. unsalted butter
4 cups mixed in-season berries, such as blueberries, blackberries and sliced strawberries
Powdered sugar for garnish, optional

Directions

In a large, shallow baking dish, whisk together orange zest and juice, milk, cream, vanilla, honey and eggs until well combined. Partially submerge each bread slice in egg mixture for 15 minutes. Flip over each slice and repeat.

Heat vegetable oil and butter in a large, nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook 4 pieces of bread at a time until golden brown, flipping once, about 2 minutes per side. Repeat with remaining bread. Divide French toast among 4 plates and top each with 1 cup berries. Dust with powdered sugar, if you like. Serve immediately.
