King-sized kiwifruit

A new kiwifruit variety offers more than ever to love: The Mega Kiwi is nearly 50 percent larger than its traditional counterpart, with the same sweet flavor. Fans say the extra-large size of the fruit, the result of a natural genetic mutation, makes it easy to peel and eat. Mega Kiwis, now in only their second commercial harvest and available in select grocery stores from fall to spring, are grown exclusively by the Kliewer family in Reedley.

Mooving the heart

Dairy lovers can rejoice at several new studies pointing to the health benefits of indulging creamy cravings. One study found that eating yogurt regularly—about 2 cups a week—was associated with a decrease in risk of cardiovascular disease in people with high blood pressure. Another found consumption of full-fat yogurt, milk and cheese was associated with a decrease in risk of cardiovascular disease.
