Food and words have always been two of Barbara’s top interests, so it’s probably no surprise she has shaped her career around both.

After earning a degree in home economics journalism (yes, it’s a thing!) from the University of Missouri, Barbara served as food editor of two daily newspapers, managed public relations for a nonprofit, wrote for a food-oriented PR agency and edited two grocery-industry magazines.

That’s a lot of words about food!

Since 2006, Barbara’s goal at California Farm Bureau has been to use words—paired with compelling photography and design—to connect California Bountiful readers to the people who provide the world with food and a host of other agricultural products. She says she learns something new every day from farmers and ranchers. For instance: Most of the state’s sunflowers are grown for their seed—not for us to eat but for other farmers to use to grow more sunflowers. (Want to find out why?)

Ever since Linda grew up in Santa Rosa surrounded by vineyards, orchards and all kinds of farms, she’s been fascinated with agriculture.

“The fact that you could put a tiny seed in some dirt and it would transform into food just seemed like magic,” she says.

At her first opportunity, she planted a large backyard vegetable garden and every summer her kitchen overflows with squash, green beans, tomatoes … you name it. Her favorite hobby also taught her something: Growing food can be complicated—often thwarted by weather, pests, critters and weeds.

Linda has also been a regular farmers market and farm-box customer who appreciates knowing who grows her food and how.

So, after a long career as a newspaper reporter, feature writer and editor, she is thrilled to use her journalism experience to tell the stories of hard-working farmers and ranchers who bring food and other commodities to Californians and the world.
