Fresh Ideas: New fall favorites

Sept./Oct. 2011 California Country magazine

What's on your list of favorite foods? Surely there's room on that list for more! Here are a few new items to consider, all with a strong tie to California farms and ranches.

Healthy indulgence

WineTime Bars are gourmet chocolate bars infused with resveratrol, an antioxidant that scientists say makes drinking red wine good for you. Each bar has the equivalent of resveratrol from 50 glasses of red wine. California-grown ingredients including dates, almonds and apples are used to make the low-calorie, high-fiber bars.

Carrot confections

Kern County carrots and rich California cream are two of the ingredients used to create the unique flavor combination of Amella Carrot Cake Caramels. Inspired by the popular American dessert, these artisan caramels are made in Lynwood and are also available in Black Forest and Passion Fruit varieties. Consumers can mix and match when selecting from nine-piece, 18-piece and 3-lb. packs. It's a chèvre-olution

In a nod to its roots in laid-back Humboldt County, Cypress Grove Chèvre has introduced a new Flash Back 6-Pack of fresh chèvre. Groovy labels adorn the collection, while funky names add to the fun. Three of the cheeses—Herbs de Humboldt, PsycheDillic and Sgt. Pepper—are reformulations from the Arcata-based company, known as a leader in the domestic goat cheese market.

Mobile matchups for cheese

A new mobile tool from the California Milk Advisory Board eliminates the guesswork when it comes to creating perfect cheese and beverage matchups. The Real California Cheese "Pair Savvy" smartphone application—or app—helps consumers pair more than 250 varieties of California cheeses with wine, beer and even chocolates. The free application works on both iPhone and Android devices. Just search for "Pair Savvy" at the App Store or the Android Market.
