Watermelons round out the party

Aug. 2012 California Bountiful magazine

If summertime had a mascot, it might be the watermelon. But there's more than one way to slice its—literally! Here are some fun serving ideas—and more—from America's watermelon farmers:

  • Carvings: Who knew a watermelon could take so many forms? A shark, robot, flowering garden, keg….
  • Just for kids: Resources range from craft ideas to coloring books in English and Spanish.
  • Fun facts: Find out how early explorers used watermelon. (Hint: The fruit is 92% water.)

And great news! Watermelon farmers in California tell us this year's crop has been excellent as a result of good weather during the growing season. The harvest began in mid-June and will run through the summer.
